The top five hospitals that have turned Turkey into a medical tourism powerhouse
Previously we covered how medical tourism is on the verge of becoming a dominant economic strategy in developing countries, we also went a little bit more in depth about medical tourism in turkey, its tourism attractions and the fields of medicine at which the country excels.
Already a tourism giant, Turkey has put a massive financial effort behind the medical tourism section, and currently is the undisputed medical tourism leader in its region, all of these accolades however would not have been made possible without the tireless efforts of the best Turkish hospitals, five of which we will examine today.
All the Hospitals mentioned today bear a Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation.
The American Hospital
Much like our list of best hospitals in the metropolis of Dubai, the American hospital makes an appearance on the list. Originally founded by the American Rear Admiral Mark Lambert Bristol as part of the Red Cross back in 1930’s, today however, the American hospital is part of the prestigious “Koç” healthcare group that runs some of the very best hospitals in Turkey.
The American hospital is the leading responsible party of Turkey being recognized as a power in the field of oncology and cancer treatment.
Throughout the years the American hospital has served not only as treatment center but also as a research institute which has resulted in Turkey making a name for itself in medical tourism.
As of 2019 the hospital serves over 220,000 patients every year. It houses 278 inpatient beds, 36 intensive care beds and, and 12 operating theatres across its 60,500 square meter building. It is fully equipped with the latest technologies, and has an entire emergency section built in, featuring helipad for extremely urgent cases. The elite non-profit private hospital is located in the Nişantaşı neighborhood of Istanbul.
Acibadem Hospital, Istanbul
Today the only hospital chain capable of competing with the Koç group in Turkey is the Acibadem healthcare group. The hospital began its work as a small local hospital in a remote district of Istanbul. Now Acibadem is a full-fledged international brand with hospitals all over Turkey and beyond. They have now a number of hospitals across the Balkans, becoming the largest private healthcare provider in Bulgaria.

The Koç foundation has already made an appearance with their renowned American Hospital, however this hospital simply was to hard not to feature on today’s list. It is the newest medical center on the list and the latest in line of generations of medical experience and growth in the Koç group.
Koç University Hospital was founded on September 2014 as the as not only a hospital, but also an education and research center alongside Koç University Medical School which kick started its first academic year in 2010–2011 term.
The hospital covers an impressive area of over 220,000 square meters and has specialist, general, pediatric and oncologic clinics in the hospital. It houses 400 rooms, 77 ICU theatres, 88 examination rooms, 250 outpatient areas and 13 operating theatress.
The campus buildings belong to Koç University School of Medicine and Nursing as well as the surrounding buildings, social areas and student accommodation centers.
Medicana Camlica
Founded in 1999, Medicana Camlica is a subspecialist hospital belonging to the Medicana Group known for its world-class healthcare services in Turkey, especially the cities of Istanbul and Ankara. The hospital has 150 beds and performs over 8 thousand angiography and 1500 by-pass procedures per year, a testament to the capabilities of the hospital in the cardiovascular sphere.
